A tree on Vienna's Ringstrasse was swallowed whole by, well, a hole. The Ringstrasse circles the historic downtown portion of Vienna, replacing the old city's walls which were ordered torn down by the Hapsburg's in 1850 (but not completed until 1930-ish). Sigmund Freud was known to take walks around the Ringstrasse. Many of the large trees surrounding the wall were cut down and used as fill for the foundation, but those trees are now rotting out leaving large caverns, one of which sucked the 17 foot tree almost completely underground.
The section of the street surrounding the cave in has been closed off while the Viennese consider the Freudean implications of the cave in.
